Pilates – Not Just for Skirts!

What do             rock legend Ian Moss, swim star Eamon Sullivan and golf pro Tiger             Woods all have in common?

They all             practise Pilates.

More and             more men are beginning to practise Pilates for its health and             conditioning benefits, and many serious male athletes are including             Pilates as part of their workout regime. Why? Here’s five great             reasons:

Increased Flexibility
This is an area where men can really reap the rewards of doing             Pilates, since there is such a wide and diverse range of specific             exercises and techniques involved. Each of these exercises is             designed to increase the motion range in all joints throughout your             body. Because the structure of the male body is different and             usually tighter to women, Pilates can really make a big difference.

All-over Strength
Functional strength is a core component of Pilates. This means that             the body must maintain correct posture and muscle patterns at the             same time as building strength. Win-win!

Great Abs
Who doesn’t love the look of chiselled abs?! Pilates has a unique             and targeted range of exercise that specifically target your abs,             meaning you can deeply work your core, and give yourself added             strength through your abdominals.

A Younger, Happier You
Did you know that Pilates workout release internal anti-ageing and             stress relieving chemicals inside your body? These chemicals give             you a natural high - meaning that you will leave any Pilates             session feeling on top of the world.

No one             enjoys being injured, and for all of the above reasons, Pilates is             one of the best ways to prevent injuries. Doctors and             Physiotherapists are constantly referring patients to Pilates for             rehabilitation – and the results speak for themselves!

If you             would love to learn more about Pilates and the world of good it can             do you, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic and speak to             one of our experienced physiotherapists today.

Stress Handling Tips

Tip # 20. Soak it Up

When you have the time, nothing is more stress relieving than a hot             bath. But when you don’t have time, do the next-best thing:              wash your face or even just your hands and arms with hot water. The             key is to imagine that you’re taking a hot bath. It’s basically a             visualization exercise, but the hot water makes it feel real.

Hamstring Injuries In Cricket

hamstringWith the cricket season up and running at Ormond Cricket Club the need for the right preparation and warm up becomes very important for all players. Having a well prepared and tailored stretching and strength program can help keep soft tissue injuries at a minimum such as the old favourite hamstring strain.

Hamstring Strains can occur from tight muscle groups, fatigued muscles, a tight lower back nerve complex and a quick acceleration such as a quick single running between the wickets.

At Ormond Physiotherapy we can assist in the prevention of such injuries with a screening assessment to identify risk factors, help in the treatment of such injuries and in the recovery and rehabilitation to return to cricket as quickly as possible. The key to the treatment of hamstring injuries is the quick assessment by Ormond Physiotherapy and the immediate start of an appropriate hamstring treatment plan to rehabilitate the muscle tissue. Treatment can include ice, stretching , strengthening, postural control, massage and specific return to cricket exercises.

This will enable the quick return to the team and the least amount of games lost as possible with the least chance of a recurrent strain.

Blog: Exercise and Injury Prevention in Spring at Ormond Physiotherapy.

Melbourne in Spring is a great time to get back into the sports you love. Better weather, more daylight hours and the desire to be fit for summer means that exercise becomes more desirable and more fun. Melbourne also offers a number of fun runs and cycling events in the warmer months. Ormond Physiotherapy supports a number of events during the summer months.

There is a definite spike in injury levels clinically at Ormond Physiotherapy in conjunction with this increase in enthusiasm for exercise. It is very important when getting back into exercise or training for a particular event that you follow a program from Ormond Physiotherapy that allows you to build your fitness gradually and comprehensively to prevent injuries occurring.

Increasing each aspect of the program by 10% each week is a good rule of thumb that we follow at Ormond Physiotherapy. This 10% can be either the amount of time spent exercising, the amount of repetitions or sets of weights completed, the intensity of the exercise or the amount of sessions done per week. Completing at least 10 minutes warm up and cool down and stretching adequately is also vital to help prevent injury.

It is a essential to have a fitness assessment at Ormond Physiotherapy prior to starting an exercise program to gain a base measure of fitness. Those serious about committing to training must also have a general biomechanical assessment by an Ormond Physiotherapist to ensure that no underlying mechanical issues adversely affect their training. At Ormond Physiotherapy we will look at lower limb posture, strength and flexibility, walking gait and a thorough spinal assessment. Orthotics and rehabilitation-type exercises and stretches may also be prescribed at Ormond Physiotherapy.

If you experience pain while exercising that is worse than simple working soreness, or if something doesn’t feel quite right it is a essential to see your Physiotherapist as soon as possible. Injuries that are addressed sooner rather than later generally have a more rapid recovery and interfere less with your training program than those left for longer periods.

HYDROTHERAPY AT ORMOND PHYSIOTHERAPY

Hydrotherapy is a physiotherapy exercise session that is carried out in a pool heated between 32-36 degrees. Participants in hydrotherapy classes participate in exercises specifically tailored to their physical condition with the intention of normalising movement and reducing pain levels. There are many benefits of exercising in the water over land at Ormond Physiotherapy’s new hydrotherapy class.

The warm water helps to relieve muscle tension and promote physical wellbeing, while the hydrostatic pressure of water reduces swelling and pain levels. The presence of buoyancy in water assists with the performance of exercise which may be difficult to perform on land due to the resistance of gravity. Participation over time at the Ormond Physiotherapy hydrotherapy class will help to improve strength, flexibility, muscle power, endurance and improve blood circulation.

Hydrotherapy at Ormond Physiotherapy can assist in the rehabilitation of most conditions from acute injuries to post surgical management to the treatment of chronic pain. It is particularly beneficial for lower back injuries(disc injuries, sciatica), shoulder rehabilitation(rotator cuff, frozen shoulders), post surgical rehabilitation such as total knee and hip replacements, ACL reconstructions, post spinal surgery, general deconditioning from illness or disease and for those suffering from osteoarthritis.

Ormond physiotherapy is commencing our hydrotherapy program on Wednesday June 13. Classes will run weekly, from 2.30pm – 3.30pm under the supervision of an experienced physiotherapist. Secure your place in the class or for further information call us on 95786588.

HAMSTRING INJURIES

The hamstrings are a group of  muscles located on the back of the thigh which play a major role in our movement with a number of activities and sports. The action of the hamstrings is to flex (bend) the knee and extend (straighten) the hip.

Acute hamstrings injuries occur due to too much repetition or a sudden force or pull of the hamstring muscles. Common activities hamstring strains can occur include any running sports such as football, soccer, hockey, tennis , athletics and aerobic/gym exercises.
Hamstring strains differ in severity and can occur in one or more of the hamstrings muscle group causing pain, tightness, decreased strength and problems with walking.

With appropriate physiotherapy most athletes will regain full strength and function of their hamstrings. An immediate and appropriate treatment plan of a hamstring injury by an experienced and qualified physiotherapist is essential in ensuring a quick recovery and fast return to sport or activity. A delay in treatment can cause the condition to become chronic, slowing the healing process down significantly resulting in prolonged recovery time and an increased chance of future recurrence.

At Ormond physiotherapy you will receive a thorough assessment on your initial consultation involving a specific treatment plan explaining the timeframe to recover and essential steps needed to get you back on track as quickly as possible.
Treatment may include the following; soft tissue massage, dry needling, joint mobilisation, electrotherapy, biomechanical/technique correction, ice/heat, education, stretching and strengthening exercises.
Along with this your Ormond physiotherapist will determine which factors have contributed to the hamstring strain, identifying the cause of your problem and thus treating the injury correctly to prevent a recurrence of the injury.
Guidance by a physiotherapist at Ormond Physiotherapy throughout the rehabilitation of  a strained hamstring will ensure an optimal outcome and then an appropriate maintenance program to ensure you stay on the field or court for the entire season.

Make an appointment with Kylie Fayyad at Ormond Physiotherapy to treat your injury needs now on 9578 6588.

CLINICAL PILATES

Clinical Pilates was developed as a specific treatment method for physiotherapists to develop and enhance functional core stability through the static and dynamic activation of local and deep stabilising muscles.

Clinical Pilates exercises can be performed using specific pilates equipment involving programmed and tailored exercises and stretches.

Ormond Physiotherapy use a clinical reformer to perform specific pilates exercises in combination with exercise ball activities and matt exercises.

Clinical Pilates is beneficial for spinal conditions such as lower back pain, neck pain, thoracic postural pain and headaches. The Ormond Physiotherapy reformer is used in the recovery of disc injuries, spinal joint injuries, muscular strains and arthritic conditions. In the general population clinical pilates can be used to improve posture, joint flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and conditioning, safeguard against injury and improve health and well being. It can also be used to improve sporting performance and occupational performance.

An individual assessment and thorough examination is conducted by a qualified and experienced physiotherapist to identify areas of concern, goals, strengths and weaknesses. A comprehensive and tailored program is then developed to focus on the individual's needs and highlight strategies to achieve both short term and long term goals.

Ormond Physiotherapy offers clinical pilates in 10 session blocks and is most beneficial 1-2 times a week to achieve goals and individual targets. Pilates is a great maintenance program as a preventative strategy to keep injury free to be undertaken on a regular basis.

ANKLE SPRAINS

Ankle spains are the most common type of acute ankle injury and afffect both the general and sporting populations. Although considered to be somewhat of a benign inury that will heal over time, the correct rehabilitation is vital to prevent recurrence and optimise function and therefore hasten return to sport and activity.

WHAT IS AN ANKLE SPRAIN ?

The term ankle sprain indicates that there is some degree of damage to the ligaments of the ankle. Ligaments connect bone to bone and are found on the inside and outside of the ankle. The most commonly ligament injured in the ankle is the outside ligament called the lateral ligament and is sprained when the foot inverts or rolls outward. This causes the ligament to become inflammed and swelling can occur limiting function and causing pain.

HOW CAN PHYSIOTHERAPY HELP ?

Physiotherapy immediately after an acute ankle sprain will help to ensure the ankle's function is optimised and prevent the chance of recurrence. A qualified physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment of the ankle to determine the main problems and develop a specific action plan to ensure recovery. Some ankle sprains can take 6 weeks to recover and physiotherapy is needed three times a week in the initial stages to rehabilitate fully. Physiotherapy treatments involve ultrasound, massage, mobilisation, stretching, strength exercises, balance exercises and therapies invloving initially ice and later heat.A specific return to activity plan will be tailored to meet the needs of your activity and specific goals.

26/10/11 LOW BACK PAIN !!!!!!

Low back pain affects up to 85% of the population at some point during their lives and is the most significant health problem affecting people in the 20-50 year age bracket.

Low back pain can be attributed to a number of causes from poor workplace ergonomics to pregnancy or it may have an insidious cause.

It is often quite difficult to pinpoint the anatomical cause of low back pain, as various parts of the spine and surrounding muscles may contribute.  Some common causes of low back pain include damage to the intervertebral or facet joints of the spine, vertebral dysfunction , sacroiliac joint disorders or muscle strains.  Low back pain generally takes around 4-6 weeks to resolve completely and a maintenance style program is usually recommended to prevent reoccurrence.

When the patient first presents with low back pain, the physiotherapist will take a detailed verbal history and examine your posture, muscle tone, core strength, range of motion and palpate the joints in the spine for stiffness and pain.  They may also assess your nerves if you show symptoms such as pins and needles or numbness in your legs.

Physio treatment of low back pain will be tailored to your specific problem but commonly includes a combination of massage, exercise, trigger point work and mobilization or manipulation of the joints in the spine.  Other techniques such as heat treatment or taping may be used.

Clinical pilates has been shown to be effective in reducing low back pain by improving core stability and control.  It is most likely to be adopted once the pain has mostly resolved as a form of maintenance to prevent injury recurrence.  Assessment of workplace ergonomics is important in the treatment and prevention of low back pain.

It is important to get all low back pain assessed and treated correctly as quickly as possible to improve your pain immediately.

Lower back pain can range from a dull ache to specific areas of pain, which, left untreated can become debilitating. Painkillers may ease the symptoms but they do not treat the cause of the pain. HYDROTHERAPY AT ORMOND PHYSIOTHERAPY

Sunday, 03 March 2013 23:50

Exercise and Injury Prevention in Spring at Ormond Physiotherapy

Sunday, 03 March 2013 23:47

Call us at Ormond Physiotherapy on 9578 6588 today.
