Everyone has heard of Pilates at one stage or another. However, many of us may not know that there are different forms – mat and reformer.
Pilates is a strengthening and stretching form of exercise aimed at targeting the whole body, developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1960s. Mat Pilates is performed on the floor on a mat, and can be done with minimal equipment.
Like reformer Pilates, mat Pilates has many different benefits. Including but not limited to;
- Improved posture.
- Improved coordination.
- Improved balance.
- Toning of muscles.
- Strengthening of muscles.
Additionally, evidence shows Pilates can have a profound effect at minimising neck and back pain. This is achieved by focusing on areas that require strengthening and targeting structures that require stretching, all in the same session! Pilates not only helps with injury rehabilitation but plays a big role in injury prevention.
