Sometimes a pain the the butt is more than sciatica. Although an uncommon condition, piriformis syndrome can mimic the symptoms of sciatica. But do you know what piriformis syndrome is?
What
The piriformis is a flat band like muscle located in the buttocks near the top of the hip joint. This muscle is important to the lower body as it stabilises the hip. It also assists in lifting and rotating the femur to allow us to walk and cross our legs. Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve.
Signs and Symptoms
Piriformis syndrome usually starts with numbness and tingling in the buttocks. Pain can be severe and radiate down the sciatic nerve. This pain can be triggered by sitting for long periods of time, running, taking the stairs and applying firm pressure over the piriformis to name a few.
Diagnosis and Treatment
If left untreated, piriformis syndrome can develop into a chronic condition, requiring additional interventions. Therefore, early diagnosis is important. Our experienced physiotherapists are able to complete a range of different diagnostic tests. Your physiotherapist will then give you advice on rest requirements, exercises and stretches to aid your recovery. Until you are able to see a physio, it is important to avoid triggering activities and positions, and rest as much as possible.
